Pollution-proof your skincare

There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing the right skincare products to include within your beauty regime.  When shopping for new lotions and potions, as a rule, I generally look for products, which can keep my skin blemish free, tackle the labyrinth of fine lines on my forehead and for the most part, anything which contains the phrases ‘glowing’ or ‘hydrating’, because my skin is a thirsty little bean and needs an extra injection of glow, on a daily basis.  Sometimes, however, we fail to take into consideration other important factors which affect the appearance and feel of our beautiful faces.  I think we all know that UV rays, poor diet and lack of water can all leave our skin feeling a bit unhappy, but did you know that pollution tops the list, for those of us who live in cities?  I carried out a bit of research into the effects of excessive exposure to daily pollutants, on our skin and to put it simply, the damage caused, in some cases, replicates that of sun damage! Whaaaat?!

So what does excessive exposure to daily pollutants actually do to our skin?

  • Pollution can reduce the radiance of the skin and leave it looking dull and sallow.
  • It can increase skin sensitivity, causing irritation, which can lead to premature ageing! (Nooo!)
  • It can increase sebum production (too much of this can cause acne) (MAKE IT STOP!)
  • It may also reduce natural anti-oxidant defences at the skin’s surface
  • and weaken the skins defensive barrier

Never fear – Dermalogica is here!

Fortunately for us city dwellers, there is a vast array of products currently on the market designed to tackle the environmental and biochemical triggers known to wreak havoc on our skin.

Recently I’ve been really excited about any product which claims to tackle pollution build up.  If you follow me on instagram you’ll have probably seen me raving about a great detoxifying clay mask, from the popular skincare brand, This Works, which also claims to be an anti pollution skincare product, designed to detoxify, rejuvenate and decongest.

When I discovered that Dermalogica had released a product with anti-pollution technology to purify the skin, I knew that I had to introduce it into my evening skincare routine, along with the Special Cleansing Gel and Skin Smoothing Cream.

Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant

What is it?

The Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant is similar to the Daily Microfoliantin, in that it scrubs away excess skin, with the additional bonus of fighting environmental and biochemical triggers known to cause accelerated ageing. The advanced powder formula releases powerful enzymes, skin-smoothing alpha hydroxy acids and anti-pollution technology to purify the skin. It also includes activated binchotan charcoal to absorb toxins, and red algae to help protect from future damage.

What does it do?

Ive never tried anything quite like this product before, when you pour a small amount onto the palm of your hand it almost looks like grey sand, but once you add a small amount of water and work the product into the skin, it fizzes up, similarly to a lush bath bomb.  It is specifically designed to rid the skin of pollutants which build up throughout the day.  The Superfoliant is a serious resurfacing agent for those of us looking to tackle those fine lines and wrinkles.  The formula of this, isn’t scratchy or uncomfortable and is instead fairly creamy and easy on the skin. Because of its charcoal properties, it removes the impurities (similar to an extraction) and leaves skin feeling as soft as a baby’s bum.

My thoughts

When I first began using the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant, I had a mini breakout of pimples around my chin, I simply put this down to my pores finally being unclogged and my skin getting used to a new product, as after a week or so and once my period had ended, my skin cleared up completely.  I have always had a problem tackling blackheads around my nose and chin area, but since using the Daily Superfoliant, I have noticed a reduction in the amount of blackheads that I have needed to manually extract, which is a huge relief, as its a problem, I’ve been dealing with since childhood.

Would I purchase this product with my own cash?

I will absolutely be re-purchasing the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant, as i’m pretty sure its witchcraft, in a bottle, when it comes to tackling my blackheads.  Ill be honest the Special Cleansing gel and Skin Smoothing cream, whilst perfectly lovely products, didn’t excite me that much, i’m too devoted to Clinique for my Cleanser and Charlotte Tilbury for my moisturiser, so I probably wouldn’t buy these.  I will of course be on the look out for other Dermalogica products, as id love to see what other magical potions they have developed. (something to tackle serious eye bags, would be nice! i’m yet to find a product which thrills me!

These products were sent to me as a gift, I was not paid to review them, all views and imagery are my own.
